Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from intraday coverage through to in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It’s what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time.

As part of our efforts to expand our coverage in Japan, we are looking for an ambitious and resourceful reporter to join our commodities team in Tokyo. In this role, you will be responsible for coverage of the Japanese trading houses, some of the biggest players in the commodities universe.

Working closely with colleagues across the newsroom, you will be expected to develop a deep understanding of major companies from Mitsubishi to Marubeni, and to build the meaningful connections required to break news on their changing strategies.

You will be writing on Japan’s role within the global supply chain, as the world grapples with the energy transition and tries to reduce dependence on Chinese critical minerals. You will also contribute to our wider commodities coverage, including our market-leading reporting on natural gas in the region.

While this role sits with the Asia Energy team, we expect the reporter to work across groups, especially with the Oil and Metals teams, for whom these heavyweight traders are also essential.

We’ll trust you to:
Break news in English on companies, markets and broader trends
Get right to the heart of the biggest stories to interpret wider industrial and economical impact
Generate quick analysis on fast-paced developments, as well as long-form stories with in-depth insights
Work seamlessly and proactively with teams across regions and departments
Be innovative and creative in writing and formatting stories

You’ll need to have:
A minimum of 5 years of recent experience in financial journalism
Experience working at a real-time news service
Experience covering metals markets or commodities as a reporter is preferred
Excellent news judgement and an ability to collaborate across teams and platforms
Proven ability to build sources
Native proficiency in both spoken and written Japanese and business level of spoken and written English
Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization
