Full-Time

BBC seeks a digital biz reporter in New York

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, Full-time – at will

DEPARTMENT: BBC News

LOCATION: New York, USA – Hybrid

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: $75,000 – $95,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Any offer of employment with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are recruiting a digital reporter to work on business coverage for our website (BBC.com/news) and app, based in our New York bureau.

You will be part of BBC News’s Money and Work unit, which provides material to the website, both in the UK and internationally. Our aim is to tell and break important business stories in a way that general audiences understand. We seek to make stories relevant and accessible and help our audiences understand the impact on their own lives.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

It’s an exciting time to be part of BBC News as we grow in North America. Our independent, impartial and unrivalled global journalism has made us one of the most trusted news brands in the US, where we reach tens of millions of people each week across digital, TV and radio.

The BBC has a highly engaged audience in North America, who turn to us for global insight that helps them understand the forces shaping their world. You’ll be able to connect stories on Wall Street and at the White House to the wider US and global economy, picking out engaging storylines that bring them to life.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact Your primary role will be to write business news stories for the website – writing about what companies are doing, market movements, and covering big economic announcements in ways that make sense to a general audience. You will work alongside a senior business journalist in New York, liaising closely with colleagues in both London and our US headquarters in Washington DC.

You will be expected to come up with original ideas for stories as well as how to treat them and cultivate a wide array of sources to help make our daily coverage distinctive.

The role also involves writing breaking news stories, getting stories live within minutes so you’ll need to have experience of writing quickly and accurately under tight time pressure and must demonstrate experience of translating complex stories into accessible and engaging online content.

As well as straight news stories, you’ll be expected to write live page posts and news features, finding original angles and going behind the big business headlines.

It’s a fun and varied job, where you’ll be given opportunities to write and report on a huge range of stories, from store closures at Walmart to the fluctuating price of eggs to the changing world of work and the impact of tariffs on firms and people.

Essential Criteria YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • We are looking for an experienced business journalist who knows how to read company results, understand financial markets and make sense of a detailed economic report to pick out a strong and relatable top line
  • Excellent and demonstrable knowledge of business and economics, with an understanding of the global perspective that makes the BBC distinctive in the North American market
  • Experience of writing accurate, engaging and fast-paced business news for digital audiences with attention to accuracy, context and tone
  • Proven ability to cut through jargon, and make complex stories appealing and understandable to a broad business audience
  • Experience of writing in a variety of formats to tight deadlines – from breaking news and explainers to live blogs and news features
  • The ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
