FT seeks U.S. equities correspondent, Treasuries correspondent

April 19, 2021

Posted by Chris Roush

The Financial Times is looking for two energetic and ambitious reporters to join the US markets team in New York to cover two of the most important asset classes on Wall Street: US equities and government debt.

The openings come at a critical juncture for financial markets, with Treasuries in turmoil as the US gradually reopens and inflation worries grip investors, and equities in the middle of one of the most compelling David-vs-Goliath tales in the recent history of finance, as retail investors attack hedge funds on their own turf.

The equities correspondent will lead our coverage of US stock and derivatives markets, a position that is among the most varied at the FT. It includes our coverage of high-profile initial public offerings, the shift to algorithmic-driven trading strategies and the Robinhood brigade who have begun to shape behavior of the US stock market. The successful candidate will be asked to identify the key issues facing investors as they put their money to work and to offer insight on market gyrations. The reporter will help cover the boom in listings of blank cheque companies by Wall Street power brokers, celebrities and Fortune 500 executives.

The Treasuries correspondent will work closely with the US economics editor, covering market reaction to the Fed, Treasury Department and White House. They will also have purview over short-term funding markets and municipal debt, writing on the ways city and state finances are recovering from the pandemic. Outside of the US, the reporter will write on sovereign debt in the Americas and will work with colleagues throughout the region covering big government bond sales and restructurings.

The reporters will be expected to work closely with colleagues in New York, Washington and London, including on the markets, deals, economics and financial services teams. Cultivating sources across a wide spectrum that includes bankers, fund managers, lawyers, regulators, traders, academics, regulators and policymakers will be critical.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Good eye for news

  • Generate market moving scoops

  • Ability to translate complex market concepts into simple language for our readers

  • Equally able to identify and write a front-page splash as well as a weekend Big Read

  • Astute story selection is important given the breadth of the beat

  • Report across all digital platforms and engage with our audience through social media

  • Weekend shifts are required as part of the team rotation
