The Financial Times is looking for two news producers to build digital editing capacity, deepen engagement strategies and produce quality journalism that drives online subscriptions. They will better position the FT to accelerate its digital ambitions around the time zones and serve better our audience in Asia, Europe and the United States.
These roles involve core daily editing and production tasks across the range of online FT journalism. They require the handling of global breaking news and analysis as well as the forward planning and preparation of upcoming news and analysis for future publication.
There will be an emphasis on finding nimble ways to enhance the FT’s story-telling capabilities online and present text-plus journalism as we near the switch to the FT’s responsive design website. An interest in gaining an understanding of what FT content is read, when and where is essential as is the enthusiasm to develop strategies to expand digital subscriptions, particularly in the U.S. and Asian markets.
Responsibilities include the commissioning, revision and embedding of pictures, tables and charts, slideshows, audio and video, as well the clever deployment of tools such as Vine and Twitter, and other emerging digital story-telling methods.
Occasionally, tasks will be project-based, and will require greater, focused attention for a period, although these will need to be pursued in a manner consistent with the daily editing demands of the job.
The news producer will need to be flexible in terms of the working day, with shifts dictated by the demands of online workflow. At present, we expect one role to help provide our morning time audience with a more competitive array of U.S. stories and the best mix of our global coverage when U.S. traffic peaks.
The second, we expect to support the evening hours to manage a second spike in breaking news — U.S. markets close, Washington votes, West Coast earnings, deals, big stories in Latin America and significant updates to the global news of the day, from Greece to Ukraine.
The roles require the versatility, confidence and intellectual curiosity to be on top of the global news agenda from Buenos Aires to Brussels. They require good working knowledge of U.S. markets, economics and politics, the ability to deal with editorial content swiftly and accurately under pressure and be comfortable working with the U.S. network of reporters and colleagues in the New York production hub.
Also important is clear communication with the digital Night team in London and the Hong Kong news operation to establish priorities and publish to a broadcast-style schedule as news happens.
