Posted by Chris Roush

The FT is seeking a dynamic and experienced journalist to lead its coverage of the energy sector from London. From the energy transition, to oil and gas markets, to geopolitics, to big energy companies, this dynamic and demanding beat is at the heart of the FT’s business coverage.

The Energy Editor will work with London-based energy reporters and the US energy team to deliver hard-hitting scoops and analysis of the companies and markets that fuel our lives. This role will steer the FT’s energy coverage and the biggest stories of the day, making calls on day-to-day coverage and shaping long-term coverage priorities.

The ideal candidate will have experience covering energy and be able to project the story across all sections and formats of the FT. As the world shifts toward low-carbon energy sources, covering the way companies and countries are approaching this transition is also key.

From oil markets, to carbon markets, to climate talks, to war, this wide-ranging role presents the opportunity to write about some of the most exciting stories at the FT.

Is this the role for you?

This role would suit a highly experienced journalist or editor, ideally with team management experience. The successful candidate will deliver their own scoops and original reporting, as well as managing and inspiring the energy team in London.

Familiarity with energy markets, corporate reporting, and geopolitics is essential – this beat has high demand from all parts of the newspaper. Cooperation and collaboration with colleagues across the FT’s global network, as well as with the climate team and commodities team in London, is also key for success.

Reporting to the Natural Resources Editor, this person will also deputise for running the natural resources team, and contribute to team planning and long-term projects like planning FT Live events.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the FT’s coverage of energy markets; the world’s biggest energy companies; and the energy transition
  • Produce scoops, features, breaking news and multi-format stories
  • Coordinate team coverage of the biggest energy stories
  • Collaborate with news desks and colleagues to steer energy coverage in other regions
  • Travel as needed for reporting
  • Work with FT Live to shape a series of conferences on the energy transition
  • Occasional Sunday shifts as part of the team rota
  • Occasional contributions to the Energy Source newsletter in the US
