The leader column – the official voice of the FT – covers topics including global politics, public policy, economics, business and technology. Subjects for each day’s columns are chosen at a meeting led by the editor, Roula Khalaf, of the Editorial Board, which brings together leader writers and senior columnists. The opportunity to work closely with journalists from across the FT is one of the unique benefits of the job.
We are looking for a candidate with expertise in economics and public policy. Experience in covering financial, business, markets and/or foreign or political news is an advantage. A high level of intellectual curiosity, willingness to take and defend strong positions, a clear prose style, and an ability to work as part of a broader team are also important attributes.
Leader writers are expected to produce crisply-argued, 600-word columns, often within a matter of hours. This requires drawing knowledge from expert sources (both inside and outside the FT), building logical arguments, and handling deadline pressure. Candidates will have an eye for news stories which call out for editorial comment.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute regular leaders on UK, European and US economic issues, and on UK policy, as well as on other subjects as required. They will maintain and develop a network of contacts in these areas, to strengthen the quality of comment and analysis and to help generate original ideas. Subject to leader-writing demands, there is some opportunity to write for other parts of the paper, whether the features or news pages.
