Posted by Mariam Ahmed

The Financial Times is looking for a New York-based data journalist to join its award-winning visual and data journalism team. You will be a key member of a nimble, multidisciplinary team, responsible for both reporting and producing original stories and enhancing our existing coverage with sharp empirical analysis and effective data visualisation. Given the FT’s focus on business and finance, a background in those subjects is an asset.

You will report to the US senior data journalist in New York, work closely with reporters and editors in New York and Washington, DC, and collaborate with visual and data colleagues around the world.

Key duties:

  • Using data, analytical techniques and graphics to find and tell stories—covering both news stories and deeper analyses
  • Producing rigorous and compelling empirical and visual work, often on deadline
  • Developing relationships and working closely with reporters and editors in the US to bolster our ongoing report with data analysis and visualisation
  • Assisting reporters and news editors with data research and display
  • Collaborating with other FT visual and data journalists on bigger visual journalism projects

Essential skills and experience:

  • Confidence in core data journalism and data science techniques: data sourcing, cleaning, analysis and visualisation
  • Comfortable pitching story ideas to editors and championing your work
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with data sources in the US
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate closely with colleagues in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong communication skills, particularly the ability to explain quantitative analyses to non-specialist audiences
  • A strong portfolio of written and visual work in data journalism or quantitative academic science

Preferred skills:

  • A demonstrable interest in core FT topics including finance, economics, business and politics
  • Experience using data visualisation effectively in reporting
  • A proven ability to learn continuously and independently in order to keep your skills at the forefront of current practice

Please submit your application by the end of the day, 9th February 2023.

Salary range:

$80,000 to $120,000
