The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville is looking for a growth and development reporter with good news instincts, strong watchdog skills, an ability to spot trends and a curiosity about what is going up and coming down around town to join our team.

This reporter will report on a variety of issues, trends and breaking news stories, but they will primarily focus on covering growth and development issues in Northeast Florida. The ideal candidate will quickly build a diverse group of sources throughout the community to help them spot unique developments, understand trends and dive into complex issues that come with a growing city.

This reporter will need to come up with their own story ideas, and also be able to juggle those with ones assigned by editors. They will produce a mix of breaking news, weekend enterprise and longer-term projects in traditional story formats and also with photos, video and alternate story forms. This reporter will be active in promoting their own stories on social media and engaging with readers to answer additional questions. This reporter will coordinate well with editors, photographers, digital producers and other reporters to help produce great journalism on deadline.

The Times-Union has a strong team of veteran and newer reporters who regularly hold public officials accountable, tell great stories and do journalism that results in policy changes. Some of our recent alumni have moved on to investigative and watchdog reporting in cities such as New York, Atlanta, Miami and San Diego.

Jacksonville, the largest city by area in the continental United States, with the largest urban park system in the country, miles of beaches, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars as well as a growing commercial seaport and airport.

Required qualifications:

  •  ·     Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related field or the equivalent in experience and education.
  •  ·     One to two years of experience in reporting for another news organization in a fulltime position, internship or fellowship.
  •  ·     Experience with taking their own photos and videos, publishing independently in print and online and promoting content on social media.
  •  ·     Work in collaboration with other reporters and editors as stories warrant.
  •   Work with editors and producers to optimize content.
  •  Experience working under tight deadlines and also producing long-term projects.
