Florida Politics/Orlando Rising is seeking a web-savvy full-time writer to cover all aspects of the Florida tourism industry, including (but not limited to) tourism, Orlando theme parks, hospitality, business and other related issues.
We are looking for a talented reporter/blogger who will own the tourism beat and drive the conversation. The ideal candidate will source and develop news related to local companies and interests, with an emphasis on stories that affecting consumers. Duties include staying up-to-date on the latest developments — monitoring news releases, social media, Google alerts, and posting online quickly to maximize digital traffic.
The right person must be a self-starter to set the agenda by working with sources and reporting relevant news before other outlets. Our reporters must carry traditional journalism skills — source building, interviewing techniques, analysis and investigative reporting, clear writing, document research — as well as a working knowledge of online and social media best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified candidates must have at least three years of experience, and a proven ability to see the tourism assignment as a regular beat. He/she must have an ability to write and edit quality, accurate content on deadline with rapidly changing priorities. The ideal individual will have superior organizational skills, a working knowledge of Florida tourism, prior reporting experience and an ability to tell compelling stories.
Additional requirements include: Understanding the nuts-and-bolts of real-time reporting; ability to create multimedia packages — including video and photos — using digital storytelling tools; familiarity with social media, including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook; assertive and creative coverage; be results-oriented and comprehend the use of data in editorial decisions as well as a passion for reporting and blogging.
Our reporters regularly engage with editorial staff to evaluate stories based on audience interest, with the goal of determining which issues to cover.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- A background in journalism, communications or related field
- 1-3 years’ experience reporting and digital writing in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with photo editing and equipment, from smartphones to professional-grade cameras, is a plus
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
- Reliable transportation
