Crain’s Cleveland seeks finance reporter

Crain’s Cleveland is seeking a business reporter to cover finance, from banking and law firms to accounting and insurance, in Northeast Ohio.

This person should be able to produce high-impact stories that explain the broader trends in finance while reporting on day-to-day happenings on the beat. The ideal candidate should have an understanding of, or a willingness to learn about, financial markets, investing, banking regulation, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and dealmaking. We are looking for a candidate with a curious mind, a keen eye for stories, and the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.

This deadline-driven individual should have experience writing both quick-hit breaking news and colorful feature stories. They should also possess strong online and social media skills.  

Job Responsibilities:

  • Report and write news and features for both print and web
  • Research 
  • Develop sources
  • Monitor and mine public filings, such as lawsuits, SEC filings and other reports
  • Compile and send a weekly dealmaking-related e-newsletter
  • Collaborate with editors and other reporters on story development
  • Attend occasional events, both Crain-sponsored and industry-sponsored
  • Other duties as assigned

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
