Business Observer in Sarasota seeks business reporter

January 26, 2017

Business ObserverThe Business Observer is seeking a full-time junior reporter/researcher to be based out of its Sarasota headquarters and cover the Sarasota-Manatee area.

This position will be responsible for researching companies for the three lists we publish each year (Top Contractors, Top Projects and the Gulf Coast 500), while also writing daily web stories, managing our social media and learning how to write more in-depth stories for our weekly print edition.

The Business Observer covers entrepreneurs, CEO and business leaders from Tampa to Naples each week. But just because we’re a weekly doesn’t mean we’re not always churning out content. Whether it’s for the web or print, the pace is fast and the stories are fun. For example, check out the microsite we did for our 40 under 40 issue: BusinessObserver4040.com

We write intelligent stories for C-suite readers. We don’t chase news — we explain trends, strategies and how business leaders are finding success in their industry. Our readers turn to us to learn lessons that can help them in their work and find out who’s doing what in our coverage area. To write for CEOs you need to think like one, and you need to know what they care about most. In fact, that’s our in-house motto: “Boss needs to know.”

We are looking for new talent to help us beef up our daily web presence and bring new ideas on how to approach our print stories. The ideal candidate will have experience covering business, and will know the basics — things like how to read income statements and how to glean important information from complex and jargon-filled press releases. This candidate must also be a business news junky. This is a publication dedicated entirely to business coverage — we want someone as passionate about telling the stories of companies and their leaders as we are.

The Business Observer is a paid subscription, weekly business publication of the Observer Media Group, which has 10 community newspapers in Florida. Check us out online at BusinessObserverFL.com.

Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. Full benefits included.

To apply, please send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 clips of your work to Executive Editor Kat Hughes at khughes@BusinessObserverFL.com.

Please put “business reporter” in the subject line. No phone calls, please.
