Business Insider seeks an enterprise editor

Business Insider is hiring an Enterprise Editor to lead our teams focused on investigative and enterprising business journalism. An award-winning publication multiple times over, Business Insider has long prioritized in-depth, revelatory journalism. This editor will be charged with shepherding the newsroom’s pursuit of such distinguishing coverage.

The role involves oversight of BI’s features and investigative desks. The Enterprise Editor is expected to lead their own teams and also work with other reporters and editors across the newsroom.

The editor is expected to bring a vision that aligns with Business Insider’s focus on business, technology, finance, and innovation. This person should be skilled at selecting subjects, guiding and inspiring reporters and editors, keeping efforts on track, and delivering compelling, impactful, and bulletproof stories.

This editor would oversee stories and packages such as Warehouse Nation, or our investigation into a prison healthcare provider’s bankruptcy maneuver.

The Enterprise Editor will work closely with the Editor in Chief to establish reporting and publication goals for the Enterprise team. This role will be located in New York City, with the editor expected to work from our headquarters at One Liberty Plaza three to five days a week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage reporters and editors on BI’s key enterprise teams and ensure teams are staffed with top talent.
  • Inspire and guide to excellence through story selection that aligns with our business-focused coverage mission.
  • Top-edit sensitive and complex stories, including working with our legal department, and coordinating fact-checking.
  • Ensure the team is delivering on appropriate timetables.

The Ideal candidate has:

  • At least 15 years of journalism experience with a proven track record of success as an editor including of enterprise journalism, and experience building and managing teams.
  • Significant business or finance journalism experience and a passion for the subject.
  • A track record of success with long-form and enterprise journalism.
  • Major journalistic accomplishments, including high-impact journalism.
  • Facility working with anonymous sources.
  • A proven ability to run big editorial projects.
  • A proven ability to successfully edit complicated stories.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
