Boston Globe seeks a real estate and development reporter

September 20, 2021

Posted by Chris Roush

The Boston Globe is looking for an experienced, ambitious journalist to cover real estate and development in Greater Boston. It’s one of the busiest and highest-profile reporting jobs at the paper, and we’re looking for someone who’s eager to jump into stories about the people, projects, and broad trends that are constantly reshaping our city.

This reporter will be based on our Business team, and expected to produce a wide range of stories, from newsy scoops about development deals to smart enterprise that explains where the city is heading. The ideal candidate will be willing to push back against powerful developers and elected officials, and also be able to illuminate complex policy issues in ways that connect with our readers. A collaborative spirit goes a long way here. So does curiosity about every corner of the city and all of its people.

Qualifications

  • A high metabolism. This is a busy beat and we want someone who can turn quick dailies while also keeping longer-term stories cooking.
  • Comfort with a wide range of sources. You’ll interview CEOs, City Hall bureaucrats, and people struggling to pay the rent. You need to be able to cultivate sources and connect with all of them.
  • A creative approach to storytelling. Sometimes a map is worth 1,000 words. Sometimes a small anecdote speaks volumes. Be willing, and able, to produce in a variety of formats.
  • A good sense of audience and how to write, report, and connect with digital readers.
  • Razor-sharp news judgment. There are just so many stories on this beat. Spot the ones that will resonate, and be willing to let the rest go.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of journalism experience in a major market. Experience covering housing, development, or urban affairs is preferred but not required.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to deliver clean, compelling copy on deadline.
  • A team player happy to collaborate with a wide range of colleagues across the newsroom.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

Please include a cover letter. This reporter will be based in Boston.
