PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: $75,000 -$95,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
You will be part of BBC News’s Money and Work unit, which provides material to the website, both in the UK and internationally. Our aim is to tell and break important business stories in a way that general audiences understand. We seek to make stories relevant and accessible, and help our audiences understand the impact on their own lives.

We are recruiting a digital reporter to work on business coverage for our website (BBC.com/news) and app, based in our New York bureau.
It’s a fun and varied job, where you’ll be given opportunities to write and report on a huge range of stories, from a drop in profits at Goldman Sachs and the fluctuating price of eggs to the changing world of work and the impact of tariffs on firms and people.
Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
- To write business news stories for the website – writing about what companies are doing, market movements, and covering big economic announcements in ways that make sense to a general audience. Working alongside a senior business journalist in New York, liaising closely with colleagues in both London and our US headquarters in Washington DC.
- Come up with original ideas for stories as well as how to treat them, and cultivate a wide array of sources to help make our daily coverage distinctive.
- Able to connect stories on Wall Street and at the White House to the wider US and global economy, picking out engaging storylines that bring them to life. The BBC has a highly engaged audience in North America, who turn to us for global insight that helps them understand the forces shaping their world.
- Writing breaking news stories, getting stories live within minutes so you’ll need to have experience of writing quickly and accurately under tight time pressure and must demonstrate experience of translating complex stories into accessible and engaging online content.
- Expected to write live page posts and news features, finding original angles and going behind the big business headlines.
Essential Criteria
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experienced business journalist who knows how to read company results, understand financial markets and make sense of a detailed economic report to pick out a strong and relatable top line.
- Excellent and demonstrable knowledge of business and economics, with an understanding of the global perspective that makes the BBC distinctive in the North American market.
- Demonstrable experience of writing accurate, engaging and fast-paced business news for digital audiences with attention to accuracy, context and tone.
- Proven ability to cut through jargon, and make complex stories appealing and understandable to a broad business audience.
- Experience of writing in a variety of formats to tight deadlines – from breaking news and explainers to live blogs and news features.
- The ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences
