Automotive News seeks an assistant online editor

Automotive News, an influential and dynamic news organization owned by Crain Communications Inc., is seeking a world-class journalist to play a key role in our real-time online news coverage.

This position calls for a multimedia-talented leader with high integrity and several years of proven experience covering automotive and/or business news for credible news organizations. We’re seeking someone who can continue to build on the great success of our editorial operations and help maximize our ability to compete for news on a global scale. Candidates must have strong reporting, writing and editing skills on real-time deadlines. Drupal knowledge is a significant plus. Candidates must show exemplary people skills and collaborate with our editorial team leaders every day. This position will eventually require occasional travel (once the pandemic subsides), along with some availability during off hours when news breaks. This position will be based in the Detroit home office and offer excellent pay and benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Routine daily updates to the autonews.com main website.
  • Editing breaking news content from wire services and affiliates.
  • Working collaboratively with full-time staff, affiliates, wire services and other content providers. Work with all relevant partners on breaking news in real time.
  • Assist other team members with social media activities to extend the reach of all Automotive News brand content.
  • Attend all relevant planning meetings for top editors.
  • Step in and help the editorial team when major news is breaking.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Applicants must demonstrate a passion for breaking news and scoops.
  • Minimum of 10 years of successful professional business journalism experience for credible, respected news organizations.
  • Proven reporting, writing and editing talents.
  • Must be able to work quickly and accurately on real-time content.
  • Must be able to pay attention to detail and nuance.
  • Exemplary teamwork skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant program.

Preferences:

  • Several years of business and/or automotive industry coverage experience.
  • Drupal knowledge.
  • Some knowledge of Twitter and other social media platforms.
  • Ability to work extremely fast on real-time deadlines. Proven track record of quality and quantity content production.
