Automotive News seeks a Los Angeles correspondent

Automotive News, an influential and dynamic news organization owned by Crain Communications Inc., is seeking a world-class journalist to play a key role in our coverage of several Asian automakers along with the West Coast automotive industry and government regulation.

This position calls for a multimedia-talented journalist with high integrity and several years of proven experience covering automotive and/or business news for credible news organizations. Exclusives and scoops are a must. Candidates must have strong reporting and writing skills on real-time deadlines. Candidates must be team players and have the ability to pivot between real-time and long-term story priorities. This position will require occasional travel, along with some availability during off hours when news breaks. This reporter will be based in Southern California and report to editors in Detroit and elsewhere.

Responsibilities:

  • Cover automakers with a presence in Los Angeles, primarily focusing on Hyundai, Kia and Honda.
  • Monitor and cover California regulation of the auto industry along with a variety of other automotive stories on the West Coast.
  • May assist with Silicon Valley coverage and help AN staff with stories about electric vehicles and mobility trends.
  • Routine use of social media to promote your stories and provide value-added content to the AN audience.
  • Participate in AN videos, podcasts and other multimedia platforms.
  • Provide a robust weekly work plan for real-time and long-term stories.

Minimum expectations:

  • Must be based geographically in Southern California.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a passion for breaking news and scoops.
  • Minimum of five years of successful professional business journalism experience with credible, respected news organizations.
  • Proven reporting and writing talents with attention to style, detail and nuance.
  • Must be able to work quickly and accurately in real-time.
  • Exemplary teamwork skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant program.

Preferences:

  • At least five years of business and/or automotive industry coverage experience.
  • Knowledge of relevant social media platforms.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, on video, podcasts or other platforms.
  • Proven track record of quality and productivity.
  • Strong organizational skills.
