This is a remote position with a preference of being based within the state of Texas.
Advance Local is looking for a dynamic Sports Editor for our brand-new website launching in Texas this summer, who can cultivate a vibrant and diverse team that captures the fervor and enthusiasm of Texas pro and college sports fans.
Our focus is on amplifying the coverage of some of Texas’ most celebrated teams and engaging with their fervent fanbases nationwide. Our emphasis will be on both pro and college football, including the University of Texas moving to the SEC in 2024. Our mission is to deliver insightful commentary, break news, and provide investigative reporting on Texas teams.
Operating exclusively in the digital space, we are seeking a leader to pioneer sports coverage on our new, statewide platform, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Sports Editor will coach reporters and develop a team that tells unique and interesting stories that make us stand out in ultra-competitive sports media landscape. The objective is to deliver breaking news, maintain a consistent buzz, and provide comprehensive analysis using digital strategies to build and engage audiences. Our aim is to create a vibrant, informed, and interactive digital space for every Texas sports fan.
Our new website will have a unique voice and the Sports Editor will bring new ideas and perspectives to deliver innovative and engaging sports coverage to readers.
What you’ll be doing:
- In this position you will be focused on strategic planning, managing project execution, supervising reporters, and overseeing performance-based metrics for the content team as well as individual employees
- Nurture talent, leading a diverse team
- Develop content across the website, social networks and podcasts
For this position, we are looking for candidates with:
- Experience leading sports reporters and beat coverage
- A proven track record of building and managing a diverse team of reporters
- Management or team-leadership experience, with excellent collaboration skills
- Ability to create and motivate a high-functioning team of contributors
- A sound understanding of news writing and story structure
- Experience using social media to identify potential stories and promote content
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
- Success developing content that differentiates the organization from competitors
- Some experience using innovative methods to grow audience and revenue
- Experience with podcasts, YouTube videos and building direct engagement with sports readers
Our ideal candidates will have the following:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communication or combination of education and related work experience with a proven ability in journalism reporting and writing
- At least five years of experience in digital media, including experience managing a reporting team
- Proven ability to lead, manage and prioritize workflow of direct reports
- Experience to drive digital innovation and audience growth
- Ability to collaborate effectively
- Strong business acumen, communication and analytical skills
