Postmedia, which owns properties in major Canadian markets, including the National Post, Vancouver Sun and the Calgary Herald, announced at an internal town hall meeting last Tuesday that it’s laying off 11 percent of editorial staff from properties across the country.
Martin O’Hanlon, president of the CWA Canada union, which represents some Postmedia journalists, said:
“It’s brutal. They’ve already cut, and cut, and cut, and cut. I mean, they’re already in the basement. And they’ve just dug a new basement. It’s terrible for communities. It’s terrible for employees. It’s terrible for democracy. And it’s brutal for journalism.”
O’Hanlon expects the media company to first offer buyouts and then proceed with the layoffs.
The move comes as Postmedia continues to struggle with financial constraints.
