Brooke Masters

The Financial Times has appointed Brooke Masters as U.S. financial editor in New York, where she will oversee the news organization’s coverage of the financial services industry.

In the new role, Masters will run reporting teams covering Wall Street’s largest banks and non-bank financial institutions – including private equity groups, asset managers and hedge funds. She will also coordinate coverage with the New York markets and deals teams, as well as continue to write her business column and cover some of Wall Street’s biggest asset managers, including BlackRock.

“Brooke may well be the smartest journalist at the FT, and having her at the helm of our financial coverage in New York will ensure our growing team is the best in the industry,” said Peter Spiegel, U.S. managing editor, in a statement. “Nobody I know is better at picking targets, asking the right questions and ensuring our journalism is tough, clear and fair.”

Gary Silverman

Masters replaces Gary Silverman, who is moving to Tokyo to become business editor of Nikkei Asia, the FT’s sister publication covering Asian business and finance. Before becoming U.S. financial editor in 2021, Silverman served two stints as U.S. news editor, overseeing the FT’s coverage of three presidential elections and the 2008 global financial crisis.

“Gary’s shoes are almost too big to fill; nobody at the FT knows where the bodies are buried on Wall Street better than Gary does, having covered this town for nearly three decades,” Spiegel said. “But Gary put up his hand to return to his first love: Asia, where he cut his teeth as a young reporter. Nikkei Asia is lucky to have him.”
