Kaiser Health News has hired Markian Hawryluk to be a reporter in its new Colorado bureau.

He will start next month.

Hawryluk is currently a health reporter for the Bend Bulletin in Oregon.

This is his second stint at the Bulletin as a health reporter. He previously worked there from 2004 to 2015 as the health reporter. From March 2015 to May 2016, he worked at the Houston Chronicle as a health reporter.

He also reported for the American Medical News and Healthcare Industry Executive magazine. A project he did for the Bulletin focused on how well Oregon is handling treatment of those addicted to opiates and where gaps may exist in the system.

He has won numerous awards for his health writing from the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists and won the 2009 Bruce Baer Award for Investigative Journalism.

He studied journalism at the University of Illinois, and in 2013, was a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan
