Washington Post investigations editor David Fallis, investigations deputy editor Eric Rich, rapid-response investigations editor Emma Brown, and rapid-response investigations deputy editor Shawn Boburg sent out the following:
We are thrilled to announce that Douglas MacMillan, a generous colleague and the author of many distinctive accountability stories, is joining the Investigations Desk’s Rapid Response team.
In his new role, Doug will apply the formidable skills in source-building and document-gathering that he has developed as a business reporter over the past two decades to dig into some of the most difficult and competitive storylines of the moment.
Doug demonstrated his ability to set the agenda when he dove into the topic of immigration detention as President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign ramped up last year. Despite having no prior experience covering the subject, Doug was soon regularly scooping competitors, including revealing poor conditions at a makeshift detention center and the homicide of a detainee there.
Doug’s work was part of the package of immigration stories that was recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.
More recently, Doug joined forces with Drew Harwell and Aaron Schaffer to investigate how law enforcement officers have abused their access to Flock surveillance cameras to stalk women, work that immediately prompted change at Flock and inside police departments.
The throughline of Doug’s work at The Post over the years, on subjects ranging from plane crashes to assisted living facilities to AI-powered facial recognition, is a commitment to exclusive journalism that makes a real-world difference.
Doug joined The Post in 2019 after covering technology companies, including Google and Facebook, for the San Francisco bureaus of Bloomberg News and the Wall Street Journal.
He will join the rapid-response team later this year.
