Derek Johnson has been hired by FCW, which covers the business of government technology, as a staff writer.
FCW covers business management, policy, pending legislation and technology.
“I’m just excited to get the chance to cover government and tech, two subjects that I’ve devoted a fair amount of my career to, for a publication that is known and respected within the marketplace,” said Johnson in an email to Talking Biz News. “As a freelancer, I had an opportunity to work with several other 1105 Media publications in the past and I really liked the fit, so that made the decision easier.”
Prior to joining FCW, Johnson was a freelance writer covering government, technology policy, higher education and politics. His previous technology writing has been published in The Washington Post, Inside Higher Ed, Washington Technology and GoodCall News.
He also spent four years as a research analyst covering state and local government technology at Deltek.
In addition to freelancing, Johnson was a staff writer for The Gazette covering Bowie, Maryland, and Southern Prince George’s County, Maryland. He wrote about government business, and covered the Bowie City Council and political scene.
He has a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University in journalism and a master’s degree from George Mason University in public policy.
