It stated:

[Michael] will be based in Detroit and focus on all the news coming out of global automakers such as General Motors, Ford and Toyota. He will report on everything from big earnings surprises to assembly plant closings to new product announcements.

In addition to reporting on GM’s global business operations, he led coverage of the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing corruption probe into the misuse of training-center funds involving the UAW and Fiat Chrysler.

He previously served as a beat reporter on Fiat Chrysler and the UAW for The Detroit News. He started his career in Michigan with Booth Newspapers and MLive Media Group.

Wayland has a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from Central Michigan University.
