Quartz editor in chief Kevin Delaney sent out the following staff hire announcement on Tuesday morning:
I’m happy to announce that Shelly Banjo is joining Quartz as finance reporter. She’ll start in our NYC offices on January 12.
Shelly will lead our coverage of the future of finance, focusing on how factors including technology, changes in consumer behavior, and regulation have the potential to fundamentally reshape the business of banks and the underpinning of investing, currencies, and payments. (She’ll also track the tensions between Silicon Valley tech honchos and Wall Street kingpins as this all develops.)
Shelly comes to us from the Wall Street Journal, where most recently she has served as a corporate reporter covering the retail sector, with pieces on the end of impulse shopping, falling store traffic, an on-the-ground investigation into Nike’s operations in Bangladesh, and a holiday sales tracking tool. She was earlier part of the team that launched the Journal’s metro section and has covered philanthropy, charities, wealth management, and personal finance for the Journal.
Shelly has an MBA from NYU and a degree in journalism and international studies from Northwestern University. She speaks Spanish and Hebrew. You can follow her on Instagram and Twitter @sbanjo
Please join me in welcoming her.
