Reuters is looking for an ambitious and experienced journalist who wants to make a name for themselves on the competitive UK banking beat.
Britain’s banking sector is thriving again, after a dramatic financial crisis which triggered thousands of job cuts, epic restructurings, massive fines for mis-selling and misconduct, shareholder cash calls, a bitter public backlash on pay and the state-backed rescue of several lenders.
We need a confident team player, with a strong track record of breaking news and building high-quality contacts as well the ability to spot trends and generate innovative story ideas.
The successful candidate will lead coverage of the industry at a critical juncture, just months before the Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates from record low levels, and before the British public goes to the polls on whether to quit the European Union – a vote which could inflict serious damage to London’s status as one of the world’s pre-eminent financial sector hubs.
You’ll be responsible for landing scoops and filing agenda-setting analyses on a rich variety of themes, including the fallout from tightening regulation and a slew of scandals such as PPI and Libor, UK government plans to recoup taxpayer cash from Lloyds and RBS stake sales, and the rise of fledgling banks and peer-to-peer lenders aiming to revolutionise Britain’s banking landscape.
You need to be a strong writer capable of filing quickfire alerts and slick copy on results days, as well as polished, authoritative initiative stories that unpick complex financial market issues and resonate with dotcom readers as well as an expert audience.
As part of a broader UK Financial Services team based in Reuters’ UK headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf, you will be expected to co-ordinate closely with the London-based European Banking Correspondent, European Regulation correspondent and the UK Government & Economics team in the UK bureau and share some duties on a busy financials file spanning white-collar crime, investment and insurance.
