Mic seeks writers for new Money site

June 3, 2016

Posted by Chris Roush

Mic is hiring exceptional in-house writers to help launch our new Money section. Mic staff writers have some of the most interesting, provocative voices in new media today, and we’re looking for a Money writer who is passionate and endlessly curious.

You’ll work alongside our Money editor to rethink conventional ideas about the role money plays in the lives of young people, redefine entrepreneurship, investment and philanthropy, and revise how we think about work-life balance, life-cycle events and planning for the future. You will inform, entertain and help differentiate Mic’s money coverage in a very saturated field.

This is a position for someone with experience writing quickly for the web. You will be responsible for pitching and writing short stories on news and trends, while simultaneously working on longer, more in-depth and reported features.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and write at least 3 stories per day, with an emphasis on daily news and trend stories.
  • Monitor social media for real-time trends and news in your space
  • Pitch and write feature stories when discussed with Money editor (reported pieces and trend pieces) — these will offer fresh angles and visually compelling perspectives on money topics important to young people

Requirements

  • Previous editorial experience at a high-volume online publication or news outlet
  • Writing clips from online publications
  • Demonstrated ability to source and report on trends via social media
  • Eagerness to offer thoughtful perspective on trending topics of the day
  • Ability to pick up the phone and do timely reporting
  • Understanding of the types of stories that perform well on various social platforms
  • Unique, passionate voice
  • Sense of humor
