NY Times biz editor on Lattman: The consummate team player

Peter LattmanNew York Times business editor Dean Murphy sent the following to the business news desk staff about the pending departure of deputy business editor Peter Lattman:

Peter Lattman is leaving The Times to join Emerson Collective – the organization founded and led by Laurene Powell Jobs – as its managing director of media.

In that role, Peter says, he will oversee Emerson’s media initiatives and help develop its strategy around supporting and investing in journalism and other content. He will be based in New York.
Six years ago, Peter joined BizDay from the Wall Street Journal as a DealBook reporter. He moved on to become media editor before returning to BizDay in 2014 as deputy business editor.
It would be hard for me to overstate the smarts, creativity and energy Peter has infused in our report from Day One.
He has been a driver of stories, helpful with sources, a mentor to young reporters, and a consummate team player. As a reporter, he was both productive (typically 200+ bylines a year) and tenacious (SAC Capital and Steven A. Cohen, for starters). As an editor, he has insisted on keeping our competitive juices flowing, has spotted compelling stories and has upped our game day after day. He has also been a great colleague, ever upbeat and eager to offer a hand.
I am particularly grateful for Peter’s counsel and collaboration these past 18 months as deputy, as we’ve integrated the media desk into BizDay and pushed ever harder to keep our journalism both authoritative and relevant in the digital age. I couldn’t have asked for a stronger or more dedicated partner.
Peter’s last day will be next Friday.
