Biz editor inundated with calls after cut listings
April 6, 2006
P.J. Harston, the business editor of the London Free Press, writes in Thursday’s paper that he was inundated with phone calls after the Canada paper cut its mutual fund listings.
Harston wrote that he received 175 phone calls in the past 36 hours and that he is still responding to all of the callers.
Harston wrote, “Some read the mutual funds as a hobby, some keep daily diaries tracking fund trends, others say their day just isn’t right unless it starts out with a cup of coffee and the mutuals.
“Some readers say they buy The London Free Press for the mutual fund listings alone, not for any of the local news, sports and entertainment coverage. As business editor, I am particularly flattered by those readers.
“Others have suggestions on how to accommodate their mutual fund cravings, or at least balance them with my plans to add more business news to the section.
“One reader suggested getting rid of all the movie reviews and stealing that space from the Today section — a hijacking of sorts.”
