The Washington Post has tapped Vanessa Williams as deputy national politics editor. In her new role, she will oversee coverage of voters and a changing American electorate. She will also help in the Post’s broader campaign and political report.

She will also collaborate with the newly formed Democracy team.

Williams has reported on the America team for the last five years on the disproportionate rate of COVID-19 infections. She has also helped write and edit “About US,” the twice-weekly newsletter.

Williams came to the Post in 1996 to cover Washington, D.C.’s city government. She has also served as the Post’s assistant city editor and has edited on both the local and national desks. Prior to the Post, she spent 12 years at the Philadelphia Inquirer.

She is a former president and board member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
