Greg Schimmel

The following announcement was sent out from The Washington Post sports editor Matt Vita and sports deputy editor Matt Rennie:

We are very happy to announce that Greg Schimmel will be the new editor of the breaking news desk in Sports.

In his time at The Post, Greg has become one of the department’s most capable, diligent and trustworthy editors.

Greg came to Sports in 2006 as a part-time editorial aide while completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland. After graduating in 2010, Greg served as a news aide, high school sports reporter and high school sports coordinator, a job in which he managed a staff of about 10 editorial aides, training them to use The Post’s results databases and overseeing their schedules. He also contributed to our coverage of the Washington Capitals.

Greg took that versatility to the Sports desk in 2013 and has flourished as a multiplatform editor, with regular shifts as copy chief and night news editor.

Greg will start his new job next month after he returns from Tokyo, where he will be one of our on-site editors at this summer’s Olympic Games.

Please join us in congratulating Greg on his new role.
