Jyoti Thottam has been appointed the new deputy op-ed editor at New York Times.
In her new role, Thottam will become one of the “Opinion Today” writers and will also oversee the vertical editors for world, culture and business/technology. She will also be responsible for shaping the daily opinion report and the Sunday Review with the team.
She will also work with employees in the graphics, video, art/design and audio departments to push op-ed to its full potential while continuing to edit Farhad Manjoo.
Thottam has been an independent journalist with her freelance work appearing in The New York Times, Bookforum, the Believer, the Village Voice and other publications. She is also launching her book.
Also, Thottam is an adjunct lecturer at CUNY Graduate School of journalism.
Previously, she has also served as senior editor and writer at Al Jazeera America. She was also director of content at U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
Thottam was also with Time magazine for some years, joining as reporter. She then moved onto the post of writer/reporter and was then promoted to the post of staff writer. She also held other posts at the magazine, including senior editor and South Asia bureau chief.
She was also a reporter for Time Digital/ON Magazine, Times Ledger, Jacksonville Business Journal and The Wall Street Journal.
Thottam graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in economics and religious studies. She also holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University.
