Wehco Media boss Walter Hussman Jr. is revolutionizing his grandfather’s C.E. Palmer’s first paper, the Texarkana Gazette, by going digital with iPads.
Hussman converted home delivery of his flagship Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to a digital replica edition starting in 2018. He followed suit with the El Dorado News-Times and the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette earlier this year.
With the new change, the Gazette’s print distribution will cease by the end of the year. Hussman added that “the traditional daily newspaper, delivered daily to thousands of subscribers and financed largely through advertising, is not going to work anywhere nowadays.”
“Too much advertising is gone. It was down 75% in 2017 from its peak in 2006, and it’s not coming back. Google and Facebook have created a better mousetrap.”
