Tom McNamee, editorial page editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, will be retiring in mid-October.

McNamee has been with the paper for four decades, serving in various roles, including general assignment reporter, health reporter, morning assignment editor and Sunday editor.

He also served as a columnist, writing “The Chicago Way,” a weekly, full-page, reporting-based column that took readers into neighborhoods throughout the city.

He has also edited for North Shore Magazine.

McNamee co-hosted a weekly radio show on WLS 890-AM for five years with Don Hayner, a former Sun-Times reporter. They also co-wrote three books about Chicago.

Steve Warmbir, interim editor-in-chief of the Sun-Times wrote:

“To say we will miss Tom is a vast understatement. . . . I don’t know anyone who knows as much as he does about public policy and how this city runs, while being so humble at the same time. But after working nearly four decades with the Sun-Times and riding the highs and lows of that journey, he deserves to spend some quality time with his family.”
