The Post and Courier of Charleston is expanding into other parts of South Carolina at a time when the rest of the newspaper industry is contracting because of the economic ill-effects of the pandemic, reports Poynter.

An industry leader among small-city newspapers, The Post and Courier of Charleston has announced that it will be launching a local digital news site this summer in Greenville. The new initiative was described as “a modern news operation” that will “hire and station reporters and editors in the area to cover news as it occurs — direct from the source.”

President and publisher P.J. Browning said, “We will have an audience executive … to engage with the community and civic organizations. … An editor, who also writes, will lead the reporting team.”

Furthermore, the site will be paywall protected from the start.

Browning added, “our projections are entirely based on audience revenue.”

Plans to open another local digital site in Myrtle Beach are also on the agenda.
