NY Times taps Shimabukuro as weekend editor

Mark Shimabukuro

The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times national editor Jia Lynn Yang:

I’m so excited to share that Mark Shimabukuro is National’s new weekend editor, charged with running our report on Saturdays and Sundays and giving The Times’s sizable weekend audience a wonderful mix of the best of National.

Mark has worked in newspapers and magazines for over three decades, focusing on, at various times, general news, city life, arts and culture, sports and the military. Before arriving at The Times to lead the Times Insider team in December 2019, he was the executive editor for Southwest Airlines’ in-flight magazine.

Before that, he was the editor in chief of GX, a magazine on the National Guard that won several editorial and design awards.

For eight years, he was also an editor at The Boston Globe, where he worked as a copy editor and served two temporary stints as the deputy arts editor before joining its Sunday magazine as a staff editor, where he coordinated special issues on education, cars, restaurants, summer travel and the annual “Best of the New” issue, among other topics. Later, he led the arts and entertainment department at The Tennessean in Nashville, managing some 20 staffers and contributors.

He began his career in sports with (what was then) The Sporting News magazine, the nation’s second largest sports weekly, advancing from an intern to its college football editor, then N.B.A. editor and later assistant managing editor.

Mark just started with us last weekend. Please welcome and congratulate him.

-Jia Lynn
