The New York Times has hired German Lopez as a reporter and writer on The Morning team. Currently, he is a senior correspondent at Vox, where he is co-host of “The Weeds” podcast and the writer of a newsletter focused on policy.
Lopez has covered several beats, including the opioid epidemic, crime, gun control, taxes, the economy, Congress and COVID-19. At The Times, Lopez will help expand The Morning to seven days a week early next year, enabling The Morning’s new weekend editions to turn into one of The Times’ largest platforms.
Previously, he was at CityBeat, an alternative weekly in Cincinnati.
Lopez is also the recipient of the Michael Q. Ford Journalism Award and is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he studied journalism and history.
