Farnaz Fassihi, a foreign correspondent at The New York Times is expanding her role and will be serving as the United Nations bureau chief, while also helping cover Iran.
Fassihi has worked as a stringer for the Metro desk after moving to New York, while attending graduate school at Columbia University. She then went on to work for The Providence Journal in Rhode Island and The Star-Ledger in Newark.
Prior to joining the Times in 2019, Fassihi was with The Wall Street Journal, where she has held the posts of Baghdad bureau chief, deputy bureau chief for the Middle East and Africa, senior writer and then United Nations correspondent.
She has won numerous national journalism awards, including the Overseas Press Club’s Hal Boyle Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Award for human rights reporting.
In 2018, she was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for distinguished contribution to American society.
