In just a few short years, The New York Times’s newsroom has made enormous strides in creating a first-in-class fellowship program. Our fellows have gone on to roles at The Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg and beyond, after a year of intense development and training.
Now, we are excited to announce the introduction of The New York Times Editing Residency, which will provide up to two years of extensive training and support.
Through this paid residency, the company commits to fostering and nurturing the next generation of editors. We plan to attract and develop candidates of diverse backgrounds, and give them the tools and training they need to help shape journalism in the future — at The Times and elsewhere.
Our training will be focused on fundamentals: news judgment, style, tone and perspective. But we will equip these fellows with the modern digital skills they need to work in a range of departments.
“We’re looking to find and help the next great editors,” said Dean Baquet, executive editor. “Editing requires discipline, collaboration and empathy. It requires on-the-job training. Through this program, we want to bring along those future leaders.”
We plan to open applications for these paid positions in early June, with some of our editors starting in fall 2021. We will post the application link in the coming weeks on our career page.
