NY Times hires Richer as assistant editor on Sports

Shawna Richer

Shawna Richer will be joining the Times as an assistant editor on the Sports desk next month. Richer brings a keen eye for digital and narrative storytelling and knowledge of Canada that will help with the company’s initiative there.

Richer started as a national correspondent and sports writer at The Globe and Mail, and worked there for more than 9 years before holding the post of editor, The Telegraph Journal at Brunswick News Inc. She then joined The Globe and Mail again as a copy editor and left in 2010.

She then joined The Toronto Star as a deputy sports editor. 2013 saw her return to The Globe and Mail as a sports editor and then as a sports and features editor.

Over her career, Richer has been the editor behind articles that have won five National Newspaper Awards, Canada’s top journalism honor, and work that has been a finalist four times.

Richer holds a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ryerson University.
