Columbus Dispatch top editor to retire at end of year

Columbus Dispatch executive editor Alan D. Miller has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the year. He plans to teach journalism at Denison University, where he has taught each semester for 22 years.

He also serves as Ohio regional editor for the USA Today Network of 21 daily news organizations in the state and is site leader for Dispatch operations in Columbus.

Miller has been with the Dispatch for 37 years and has been in the newspaper business full-time since 1982, when he started working as a reporter, photographer and editor for The Daily Record.

Miller joined the Dispatch in 1984 as a reporter. He has covered regional news, then urban affairs, Columbus City Hall, and higher education. He also worked as an assistant city editor, state editor and assistant managing editor before becoming managing editor in 2004 and editor in 2015.

Miller is a past president of the National Associated Press Media Editors association and its foundation, and remains a member of the foundation board. He is also a member of the professional advisory board for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
