BBC to lay off hundreds of staff members

BBC is expected to announce hundreds of staff redundancies, reports The Guardian. The move may come following the heavy cuts to high-profile news programs and an increasingly centralized system for producing the corporation’s journalism.

Fran Unsworth, the head of news, said that she will be calling an all-staff meeting on Wednesday to explain how the corporation plans to put the new mission of being “distinctive, trusted, engaging everyone, every day” into action.

With centralization and pooling of reporters, there will be less duplication of effort. However, many BBC reporters fear this proposed system could become hard to operate in practice, given the different demands of outlets.

As of now, BBC has declined to comment and would not confirm rumors that hundreds of jobs cuts are planned.
