BBC has tapped Sarah Smith as its new North America editor. She recently served as Scotland editor. Before that, she was based in the U.S. for several years, working for Channel 4 News.
Smith will be based in D.C. and will replace Jon Sopel, who left the role last month. She begins early next year.
Smith is an award-winning journalist who has also worked as a BBC presenter and interviewer, anchoring the Today Program, the nightly BBC Scotland Program, and Newsnight, among others. She says, “I am thrilled to be appointed as the BBC’s North America Editor. This is such a fascinating time in US politics and society, and I am very excited to be reporting these stories for our BBC audience.”
