Media Moves

Austin American-Statesman to provide some stories to subscribers only

February 3, 2021

The following excerpt note was sent out from Austin American-Statesman executive editor John Bridges:

For 150 years, the American-Statesman has told Austin’s story of change — from sleepy college town and state capital to burgeoning tech hub, tourist destination and center of creative culture.

Change has also defined the business of journalism, from our years of having separate morning and evening print editions delivered by kids on bikes to our constantly updated digital editions of today.

This week, we’re making another change as we reserve some of our reporting only for subscribers. These stories — our exclusive reporting not available through other news sources — will be labeled “For Subscribers” on Statesman.com, Hookem.com and our Statesman Live mobile app.

We know that local journalism is important — and it’s worth paying for. We thank our subscribers for their loyal support.

Those subscribers will experience no change on our sites as long as they are logged into their accounts. Subscribers will retain full access to the Statesman family of sites — Statesman.com, Austin360.com and Hookem. com — in addition to our mobile app and E-Edition digital replica of each day’s print edition.

Non-subscribers will not be able to read subscriber-only stories but will retain access to a limited number of stories each month before being prompted to subscribe.

We encourage — and humbly ask — non-subscribers who read the Statesman, Austin360 and Hookem to help support journalism in Central Texas by subscribing. Options include a digital-only subscription that provides access to all of our sites and digital products, seven-day print subscriptions and Sunday-only print subscriptions.

All print subscriptions come with full digital access. If you haven’t yet, activate your digital subscription here.

Your support matters now more than ever before.
