Sam Manchester

The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times:

The Times has serious ambitions for live coverage. We want to be a global leader by moving fast while delivering depth and insight. As part of these efforts, we’re promoting Sam Manchester to be the Live editor for visuals. He will lead us by pioneering new formats and developing new workflows that take our readers to the scene of news, combining real-time journalism with visual storytelling in ways that happen only on our platforms.

Sam will guide a team of visual editors, and he’ll provide leadership across the newsroom, building a particularly strong connection to Photo, Video, Graphics and Design in order to elevate visuals within the world of real-time journalism. Sam will also maintain a strong leadership tie to the Home team and their work presenting our report on home screens. And he will help steer the Live conversation with our product organization as we work together to build new tools for live coverage.

Jason Stallman, his editor in Sports, said, “Everything he touches isn’t simply better, it’s excellent. His transformation of the Sports desk has rippled throughout the newsroom — including his way-ahead-of-its-time approach to live event coverage.”
