Sudeep Reddy, global economics editor at The Wall Street Journal, has been named a managing editor at Politico along with Karey Van Hall.
Here is part of the memo sent by Politico editor Carrie Budoff-Brown and editor in chief John Harris on Wednesday morning:
Sudeep’s mandate as managing editor is to help deepen the impact of our policy and political coverage, identify and recruit new talent, and focus relentlessly on supporting the great journalists already in the newsroom through increased training and staff development.
From the Journal’s Washington bureau, Sudeep guides dozens of reporters and editors around the world on U.S. and global economic and policy stories. He has chronicled some of the most important shifts in the political and policy landscape over the past decade, and shaped in-depth policy coverage at the state, national and international levels for a demanding audience. He has a long record in storytelling across platforms, from being an early digital innovator to a frequent analyst of policy news on television and radio around the world. He arrived in Washington as a correspondent for The Dallas Morning News, chasing lawmakers on Capitol Hill and regulators around the capital on major policy beats, including energy, transportation, tech and immigration.
During our many conversations with Sudeep over the last few months, we were deeply impressed by how much thought he has given to what makes a high-functioning newsroom. As POLITICO grows in size, it is more important than ever to think critically about how we bring greater diversity in every form to the coverage and to the staff, break down barriers, and expand opportunities for everyone to build skills in accountability journalism.
With a collaborative style, an obsessive approach to hiring and plain common sense, Sudeep is uniquely suited for this task. He starts on Jan. 3.
