WSJ’s Off Duty makes staff changes

Dale Hrabi, editor of The Wall Street Journal’s Off Duty, sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

I’m happy to announce some staffing changes in Off Duty’s fashion department that are calculated to keep it fully au courant.

Rory Satran has joined the OD staff as fashion director. The daughter of two writers, Rory comes to the Journal from Vice Media’s i-D magazine where, as editorial director, she led her team to three consecutive Webby awards for Best Fashion and Beauty Site. She studied comparative literature at UC Berkeley and the Sorbonne, and lived in Paris for eight years, where she worked as managing editor of Self Service magazine, doing everything from vacuuming carpets to interviewing major fashion players.

Rory has written about fashion’s relevance and vagaries for publications from the Washington Post to Marie Claire, and edited a retrospective book about the fashion brand Opening Ceremony for Rizzoli. She also currently teaches in the Fashion Photography program at the School for Visual Arts. She’s active in the mentoring program Girls Write Now and, appropriately, loves to read.

Rebecca Malinsky, formerly Off Duty’s fashion market director, has been promoted to deputy fashion director, reflecting a new breadth in her responsibilities. Becky has been a key figure in Off Duty’s success, irrepressibly creative and helpfully obsessed with fashion, both on the runways and in the subways. She came to the Journal from Glamour where, as deputy fashion market director, she oversaw American and British fashion coverage, and has also held positions at GQ and Lucky magazines. She has a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin—Madison, where she was on the alpine ski team, and still schemes to get out to the mountains whenever she can escape the city and the many people who pester her to find out what color is currently in fashion. (Lavender, for women. Gray, as usual, for men.)

Jacob Gallagher, Off Duty’s men’s fashion editor, has also expanded his role with his new weekly online column, “On Trend,” which looks at fashion’s intersection with the worlds of pop culture, sports and marketing. As a writer, Jacob has been responsible for some of OD’s most viral stories and now is tackling a wider range of topics—from the trend for deliberately ugly sneakers to fringe theories that Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s choice of sweatshirt is a factor in predestining a win (or not—go Eagles!) for his team. A graduate of the New School University, Jacob has previously written for GQ, Esquire and the Awl. Do not ask him to see a movie with you, because he has already seen all of them, expect for anything featuring an Avenger.”
