WSJ’s New York section names two deputy editors

Bob Rose, the New York bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement on Thursday:

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of two deputies for Greater New York as we strive to provide the best daily report on the New York metro area, online and in print.

Andrew LaVallee, GNY’s senior editor for arts and culture, will help drive our coverage early in the day, working with editors and reporters to post enterprise stories in the morning, and with news editor Carrie Melago and her team to continue our robust coverage of breaking news throughout the day.

Joe Haberstroh, currently a news editor overseeing real estate and Connecticut coverage, will focus on longer-term enterprise and will help produce the print editions later in the day, working closely with deputy news desk editor Mel Gray.

Andrew joined the Journal in 2006, covering technology and media in New York before moving to Hong Kong in 2010. He served as special projects editor for Asia, managing digital initiatives in China, India, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia, then as life and style editor for the region. He repatriated in 2013 to become Greater New York’s senior editor for arts and culture. He began his journalism career at the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass. In his pre-journalist life, Andrew worked as a producer and project manager at DoubleClick and Razorfish, as an architecture intern at Rogers Marvel and as an artist’s assistant to Yoko Ono Lennon. Born in Portland, Maine, and raised in Mobile, Ala., he studied English and clarinet performance at Oberlin College and received a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. He lives in Brooklyn with his husband, Marco, and their recently adopted dog, Taco, and tweets at @andrewlavallee.

Joe joined the Journal in 2010, working on the U.S. desk as a news editor before moving to GNY in 2012. Prior to joining the WSJ, Joe was Associate Long Island Editor at Newsday, guiding the Long Island desk’s Sunday report and its team of specialist reporters.  As a reporter there, he wrote the newspaper’s weekly “On the Waters” column, was a member of the staff that won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News for coverage of the crash of TWA Flight 800, and covered the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building. He was previously a reporter at the Seattle Times, where he covered Seattle schools’ busing battles, old-growth timber harvests and Starbucks.  He is the author of the 2003 book, “Fatal Depth: Deep Sea Diving, China Fever and the Wreck of the Andrea Doria.” A native of Southern California, Joe has a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Joe and his wife, Liz, parents of two college students, live in Manhattan.

Please join us in congratulating Joe and Andrew on their new roles, and in congratulating GNY deputy Mike Amon as he takes on a new assignment in London.
