WSJ's LA bureau chief leaving for USC teaching gig

Gabriel Kahn, the Wall Street Journal‘s bureau chief in Los Angeles, is leaving the newspaper to teach journalism — and to help start a program in business journalism — at the University of Southern California’s School for Communication & Journalism.

Kahn became the bureau chief in late 2008. He used to be the Journal’s deputy bureau chief for Southern Europe, based in Rome, and has also been posted in Asia.

Kahn, who has a degree in Italian literature from Stanford, worked for the Associated Press in Rome as an intern. When he first came to the Wall Street Journal, he was a reporter based in Hong Kong focusing on the relationship between Chinese manufacturers and American retailers. When he returned to the U.S., he reported on politics and government for New York’s The Forward and Roll Call in Washington, D.C.

“So it’s been a globe-girdling experience here,” said Kahn by e-mail. “But I’m looking forward to the new job.”

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
