WSJ/Dow Jones seeks Canada bureau chief

Wall Street Journal deputy managing editor Deborah Brewster sent out the following announcement to the staff on Wednesday:

“We are delighted to announce a new job now open to applicants: Canada Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

“This is a new position reflecting the importance of Canada’s resources-rich economy to the Journal and the Newswires. It’s an exciting opportunity for a seasoned journalist eager and able to lead reporters based in Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary who report on everything from Research in Motion and Scotiabank to the effervescent Canadian dollar, major miners and, yes, Potash. The ideal candidate will have solid daily news experience; a proven ability to galvanize reporters to break financial and economic news; and a good eye for political, social and general-interest features.

“Canada has a fascinating economic story. It is one of the few strongly-growing developed economies, thanks to its mining and energy sectors, which have attracted much international interest, including from China. The strong Canadian dollar is of special interest as the Journal and wires ramp up global forex coverage. Multicultural and land-rich, Canada is also a font of features, both quirky and socially resonant. The bureau chief’s job is based in Toronto.

“Applications should be sent to Michelle LaRoche and Deborah Brewster/or Rebecca Blumenstein and Gabriella Stern.”
