Nancy Gauss, executive director of video at The New York Times, sent out the following announcement:
Mark Scheffler joins the video team as the Director for Core News. He will oversee the existing news team and will expand our short-form coverage to include more culture, science and tech coverage. He has experience with setting an agenda with news coverage and with original reporting, which will be valuable as the core team expands.
For the past five years Mark has been a supervising producer and senior video journalist at The Wall Street Journal, where he ran a team that worked on everything from documentaries and animated explainers to high-concept news packages and Snapchat prototypes. At WSJ, his primary coverage area was international news, and he created (and named) Worldstream, a publishing platform that allows reporters in the field to file smartphone video clips in real-time.
Prior to WSJ, he was Head of Video at the international news site GlobalPost, where he commissioned productions from over 40 countries. “On Location,” the documentary series he created, won a Peabody and two Edward R. Murrow awards. In Chicago, his hometown, he regularly shot and edited video stories for The Times, including pieces on the U.S. Senate race, aerial bowfishing and nuclear-waste disposal.
Before migrating into video, Mark was on staff at Crain’s Chicago Business and was a regular contributor to the Chicago Tribune Magazine, where he wrote cover stories and other articles. His work has also appeared on Slate, Salon and The Huffington Post.
In a former life, he fronted rock bands and worked as a house painter. If anyone ever needs a person to climb a 40-foot ladder or perform a Radiohead cover, Mark is your guy.
